CASE STUDY 10 :

Restoration of Oak Panelling and Construction of New Matching Oak Panelling
for large house restoration

The original oak pannelling was removed from the property to my workshop for restoration. The panelling was repaired where required then the finish was hand scraped to remove all the old finish. Dry Scraping also brings out the figuring of the quarter cut oak.

The panelling was re-finished to a neutral honey colour using oil and wax.

The room, from which the panelling had been removed, had been opened up and redesigned. The client wanted a new wall of panelling on the opposite wall which would match and mirror the original.

Quarter cut oak was used so as to match the figuring of the original panelling.

The new panelling was then constructed to fit the opposite wall and was designed to fit around a new fire surround.

Once the new panelling was constructed it was ready for polishing.

Several techniques and traditional materials were used to age the new panelling to emulate the patination of the original.

The final stage was to fit the panelling to the walls of the new room.
